The definitive Japanese silent film database.

Includes footage from 45 films, data on 12,000 titles and over 1,000 photographs, images of leaflets and other informative reference materials.

Shunsui Matsuda, known as the last benshi of the Japanese silent film era, greatly bemoaned the fact that most silent era films were poorly preserved, and, with his own finances, he thus made it his mission to collect together valuable classic films from the silent movie era from around the world. As a result of his persistent effort, Matsuda Film Productions now boasts a film library of approximately 1,000 titles and 6,800 reels.

The Masterpieces of Japanese Silent Cinema DVD-ROM database has been created from the Matsuda film library. Containing enhanced search functions and making use of state-of-the-art digital technology, the DVD-ROM is an invaluable resource for those wishing to experience the origins of Japanese cinema and a creative means of conveying to future generations the cultural heritage of silent film.

Faithful Reproduction of Japanese Film History
Masterpieces of Japanese Silent Cinema faithfully reproduces Japanese film history in the approximately 12,000 items collected here. It is composed of three sections: Theater, in which you can enjoy highlight scenes of silent films, Research Center, which allows you a free rein to search through the film database, and the Museum of Silent Cinema, where you can learn about the background of Japanese silent cinema.

The Research Center, which contains highlight scenes from 45 films, provides a keyword search function for the user to look up items of individual interest, or you can use the "List Search" and "Multiple Search" functions to browse certain items.
