The Masterpieces of Japanese Silent Cinema DVD-ROM database has been created from the Matsuda film library. Containing enhanced search functions and making use of state-of-the-art digital technology, the DVD-ROM is an invaluable resource for those wishing to experience the origins of Japanese cinema and a creative means of conveying to future generations the cultural heritage of silent film.
Faithful Reproduction of Japanese Film History
Masterpieces of Japanese Silent Cinema faithfully reproduces Japanese film history in the approximately 12,000 items collected here. It is composed of three sections: Theater, in which you can enjoy highlight scenes of silent films, Research Center, which allows you a free rein to search through the film database, and the Museum of Silent Cinema, where you can learn about the background of Japanese silent cinema.
The Research Center, which contains highlight scenes from 45 films, provides a keyword search function for the user to look up items of individual interest, or you can use the "List Search" and "Multiple Search" functions to browse certain items.

Range of Classic Works from Japanese Silent Cinema Brought to Life on DVD-ROM
Utilizing DVD-ROM technology to its fullest, 45 silent films have been chosen, collected together in two-minute segments and accompanied by the voices of traditional benshi narrators. Here you will find samples from a variety of Japanese silent film: from historic drama to animation and from adventure to comedy.
Invaluable Resources Telling the Story of Japanese Cinema
The DVD-ROM also contains invaluable resources collected here to paint a picture of the silent film era: programs and leaflets of screening times, movie stills, posters and more. You will also be able to read interviews with present-day benshi, silent film critics and others involved in the industry, each with a story to tell of Japanese silent film and its background.
